UCM-3220                 Universal Voiceband Data Modem 
 
INTRODUCTION 

The MuLogic UCM-3220 is a universal  voiceband modem for reliable data communication over dial-up and 2-wire or 4-wire leased lines for data rates up to 14.4 kbps.  The modem is available as compact standalone unit, as card for the high density UCF-30 rack, and as module for use in various hardware environments.  

The UCM modems can be integrated in a standard Network Management environment and offer remote configuration, control and monitoring, supporting SNMP, WebBased management and Telnet access. Alarm events are automatically reported to a central network management system. The detailed alarm reporting is useful to save precious time e.g. trying to establish if a network fault is due to a line failure or a power failure at the remote location 

The UCM-3220 has been designed to suit a vast majority of voice-band data-modem applications.  It supports all current modulation standards varying from V.21 to V.32bis and can be used on point-to-point and multipoint lines. 

When used as a leased line modem, the UCM-3220 can use the dial-up network for back-up: If the leased line degrades in quality or fails completely, then the UCM-3220 will restore the connection over the dial-up line. With the dial-up line in use, the leased line connection will be constantly monitored to check when normal leased line operation can be restored. 


 
FEATURES 
  • Multistandard: V.32bis, V.32, V.33, V.29, V.27ter, V.27bis, V.26bis, V.26, V.22bis, V.22, V.23 and V.21. The modem also operates in Bell 224, 212A and 103 modes.
  • Dial-up and 2-wire/4-wire point-to-point and multipoint leased Line operation 
  • Multipoint leased line operation in V.26, V.27bis and V.29 modes for use on conditioned multidrop leased lines and normal unconditioned cable.
  • Supports both synchronous and asynchronous data formats.
  • Automatic leased line back-up over dial-up lines. Restores operation over the dial-up network in case of a leased line failure.  Leased line quality monitor for automatic return to leased line. 
  • At power-loss, the remote modem can signal the central site modem to indication the difference between a line fail or power fail.
  • Automatic Rate Change for continuously optimizing the transmission rate with respect to the line conditions. The modem continuously monitors the signal quality and selects the appropriate transmission rate to minimize errors and maximize the throughput. 
  • AT command set for use in asynchronous (Personal Computer) and synchronous applications. 
  • V.25bis synchronous command set for use with e.g. IBM AS 400 computer systems. 
  • Automatic detection (AutoBaud) of asynchronous commands up to 115.200 bps 
  • Automatic mode detection between V.32bis, V.32, V.22bis and V.22 for dial-up operation
  • Asynchronous control port for modem management, configuration and control. This port is always active allowing the user to change features or monitor the line quality even while the modem is online. In V.32 and V.32bis modes also the remote modem can be accessed.
  • Password and Call-back security to control unauthorized access to the attached DTE. 
  • Automatic password exchange upon connection to other UCM modems. 
  • Remote Access over main channel and secondary channel for configuration, control and diagnostics. 
  • 16 sets of pre-programmed application profiles are stored in the modem. 

  • If none of these profiles is appropriate to your application, they can be customized and then saved in one of four non-volatile memory locations.  
  • Error Correction/Data compression for reliable communication as per ITU-T V.42 LAP-M and MNP4/5 
  • Simulated switched carrier operation as per ITU-T V.13 . 
  • Integration in  Network Management System by means of MuLogic NMS control units for SNMP, WebBased management and terminal/telnet access.
  • Operating software resides in Flash memory, upgradable by means of  X-modem file transfer.
 


APPLICATIONS 

Multistandard modem 
The UCM-3220 incorporates a large variety of modem standards. Nowadays it is difficult to find dedicated V.26, V.27 or V.29 modems. In order to maintain networks with large amounts of such modems the UCM-3220  features the ability to interconnect with nearly every modem that is currently used on dial- up networks or leased lines:  V.32bis, V.32, V.33, V.29, V.27ter, V.27bis, V.26bis, V.26, V.22bis, V.22, V.23, V.21 and  Bell 224, 212A and 103 modes.  

Multidrop modem 
When configured for V.26, V.27bis or V.29 operation, the UCM-3220 can be used on multidrop lines. The modem supports two modes: constant impedance for dedicated amplified and conditioned multipoint/multidrop lines as supplied by the telephone companies, and switched impedance for use on unconditioned cable.
